But the two that you will need to be concerned with the most for your pets are fleas and ticks. These two pesky little insects can cause havoc for your pets and you, as well as for your home, if they make their way in. Fleas are everywhere outside in our yards, in the woods, even places you might never even think of. There is a 4-stage cycle that fleas have to becoming an adult flea and restarting the cycle all over again. The first stage is a female laying her eggs. A female flea can lay up to 50 eggs in a single day and over 2,000 eggs in her lifetime! The second stage is the eggs forming into larvae, which move away from light and bury themselves in dark, deep places to feed. This would mean carpets in your home or cracks in the floor or heavy floor rugs. The third stage allows the flea to spin themselves in a pupae, a cocoon shape that allows them to protect themselves and fully develop. The finally stage in the flea cycle is when they turn into adult fleas and sit around in their cocoon for their first meal, which is you and your pet. This whole process takes about 20 days, and females will begin laying right after their first meal. Once they become adults, they will begin to feed, and the females will lay more eggs, tripling the amount only in a matter of days. Once the flea begins to feed, you will begin to feel nibbles that feel like an itch. Diseases that fleas can transmit are below and these conditions can deprive your pet of energy, cause skin problems or adversely affect your pet’s health. Whether you live in a wooded area, only have a small patch of grass or never take your dog or cat outside, protecting your pets with some form of flea prevention will help to eliminate them coming into your home and affecting your pets health. Frontline is a combination flea and tick preventive, that stops flea’s and ticks, but also kills their eggs and larvae from forming, which comprises over about 80% of the flea population. There are other safe alternatives to use, but please check with your Veterinarian first to see which will be a good fit for your pets. Please be weary of OTC treatments, since many of these are known to cause adverse health affects and are not very good at prevention. Spend the each money and purchase a prevention treatment from your local Veterinarian. There are many different kinds of ticks out there, but all are dangerous to you and your pet’s health. Ticks can transmit dangerous diseases, and they can be very hard to spot on your pets. Ticks can bury deep into your pets coat, where they begin to bite and attach to your pets skin and begin feeding. As they feed, if the tick is carrying a disease, it can be transmitted through them into your animal, causing them to become infected. Ticks are normally in the environment and like to hangout waiting for their next meal to walk by a bush or small flower and grab on. Ticks can hangout for up to a year without needing a meal, so they have plenty of patience! So you see how easy it can be for your dog or cat to pick up a hitchhiker and make a meal of them. Frontline and other applications help to kill and prevent ticks along with the above-mentioned fleas. Some also help to prevent intestinal parasites as well. The prevention is normally given every month and is either a small tablet or pill shaped. Pets seem to not have a problem taking it and if they do, you can break it up and mix it in their food or in a pill treat. So to close, the best prevention for you, your home and your pets is to use some form of flea and tick prevention all year round for superior protection.
