Photograph by: Dario Ayala , The GazetteYou know playoff fever has hit Montreal when fans start singing Olé, Olé, Olé outside the Bell Centre a full two hours before game time. Or when they wear puck-shaped head gear with “Go Habs Go!” on them, or show up with their shiny aluminum foil Stanley Cup replicas. Long before the puck dropped last night for Game 3 of the Canadiens-Tampa Bay Lightning playoff series, fans were getting into the playoff spirit outside the Bell Centre. People crammed onto Avenue des Canadiens de Montréal for the Fan Jam that started at 4 p.m. — an event that will be repeated three hours before every Canadiens home game during the playoffs. “The atmosphere is incredible,” said Benjamin Parizeau, 24, of Montreal who was wearing his newly purchased Canadiens T-shirt. Parizeau expressed some concern that the Canadiens, who went into the game with a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven series with Tampa, might let up a bit and lose the game. “That’s the danger, but I don’t think it will happen,” Parizeau added. “I think the guys know what they have to do. I think we’ll win big tonight. It will be 3-0 in the series,” he predicted. François Dumontier from Charlemagne wore a red spiky Mohawk-style wig. His two buddies sported blue and white versions that they picked up at a costume shop. “Everyone wants pictures with us,” Dumontier said. “It will be Canadiens in four and after that everything is possible,” he said. “You never know. The Canadiens got bounced from the playoffs after only five games last year in their first-round series against the Ottawa Senators. Dumontier said he’s more optimistic this year about the Habs. The Canadiens have a lot of depth and goaltender Carey Price has shown he’s able to play under pressure, he said. “We could surprise. Former Canadiens Yvan Cournoyer and Mathieu Darche signed autographs. In a nearby booth, some people got free Canadiens-themed tattoos. The interest in the tattoos “was more than we can handle,” said Chris Saliba, the owner of Adrenaline. They had done about 20, Saliba said, by about 5:30 p.m. Delia Xenophontos got booed good-naturedly as she walked through the crowd wearing a blue Lightning jersey. The reception she got wasn’t all good-natured, said the 19-year-old from Toronto who was there with her parents. “I’ve just always loved the Lightning,” she said. She said she wasn’t worried about the Bolts’ chances. “I have faith in them. Everything seemed noisier in the Bell Centre as you would expect during the playoffs. Fans waved the white towels they were given and chanted “Go Habs Go” during the pregame presentation, which included archival video images of the Canadiens projected onto the ice. There was a loud “Ca-rey! Ca-rey!” chant for Price before the national anthems, then a loud ovation for legendary Quebec singer Ginette Reno, who sang O Canada. Many in the crowd sang along with her. There was more for the crowd to cheer about when Rene Bourque scored 11 seconds into the game, beating Lightning goaltender Anders Lindback on a breakaway. The crowd took up the opposing goalie taunt in the first period, dragging out the pronunciation of Lindback’s last name. Andy Slipp, from Fredericton, N.B., was one of several Canadiens fans from out of town at the game. “My daughter and my wife hadn’t been to a playoff game … The atmosphere is incredible. So we had to get them up to a game,” Slipp said outside before the game as people sang the Olé song nearby. He and his son also plan to stay for Tuesday’s game. Slipp said he expected the atmosphere to be “electric” inside the Bell Centre Sunday night. “I can’t wait,” he said. bbranswell@montrealgazette.
